As a child, I have always struggled with limited space. Some official LEGO sets took up less space, whilst others took up more. LEGO has started to move away from traditional baseplates and road baseplates. It seems an expensive transition, which would leave the old road baseplates redundant.
One official LEGO set I owned was the Fire Station 7240 released in 2004. The foundation was 16x32, which was good for preserving space. I feel the set provided a simple fire station for childhood play, but was missing a proper fire engine (truck). The Police Station 7237 released in 2005, and the Hospital 7892 released in 2006, took up much more space. I enjoyed having a raised baseplate for play. A straight road, with buildings on each side, provides easy play with the layout. Road baseplates are important, but take up a lot of space. Their paths (sidewalks) are important too. I have always loved building on 32x32 baseplates, but think building on 16x16 or 16x32 baseplates may help save precious space. That is why I have interest in custom MOCs, instead of official LEGO sets. I have always built buildings with enclosed walls and without roofs - maximizing childhood playability. Some official LEGO sets have had open backs, allowing children to play with building interiors from behind. That is why I have had mixed feelings about raised baseplates. I have also liked the idea of multiple floor buildings, but these can be more tricky. I think a LEGO town is all about balanced factors. Effectively using available space. Healthy balance of realism and fun. As a child, LEGO City, LEGO Classic Town, and LEGO World City, were my favourite themes. I also bought sets from other themes, too. I bought some LEGO Adventurers sets. I felt that Johnny Thunder could venture away from the town and go on an adventure elsewhere, returning to town with treasures and artifacts. == Public Services == - Police Station, with jail, garage - Fire Station, with engine garage - Medical, with ambulance garage - Bank == Other == - Shops, Restaurants - Houses, garage/drive-way - Power Station I have always had issues with vehicles. I dislike having vehicles parked on roads. I dislike having to build garages or drive-ways. I have found that two-seaters, or even four-seaters, are rare. I have never been good at creating my own vehicles. Official LEGO sets have always given us one-seater vehicles. I disliked that a police car couldn't take away a criminal, rather relying on a prisoner transport vehicle. What do you do for town planning? |
